An Amazing Gift

Yesterday I had a very rewarding experience. I got the chance to hand over a Playstation 2 to the children of the orphanage as a gift. This was all made possible by the scholarship money I received from Augmentity (a technology company that works with my dad), and the money given by my grandparents. Being here has made me realize that this kind of money doesn't deserve to be spent on me. This is why I took the opportunity to give a gift that would last. In order to understand how big this was for the children, you must realize that there are specific stores/shacks alongside the road with playstations that you can pay to play. Now the children of Calvary Zion will forever have a gaming system to play, free at their own will.

All together I presented them with the Playstation 2 system itself, two controllers, five games (street racing, wrestling, Madagascar, soccer, and a warrior game), and a 8 gb memory card. To say the least, their faces were ecstatic when they got it. They asked me on multiple occasions whether or not I was going to take it with me when I left. They couldnt seem to grasp the fact that it was going to be theirs for good. I really wish you could have seen their faces and the state of awe they were in as they played it for 6 hours straight while I was there. Here is a picture of a couple of the kids:
Once again I would like to thank the people who made this gift possible. It is a great feeling to be able to give a gift of such quality. They will be the coolest kids at their school, thats for sure!

Next, I know that all of you have been asking for a picture of the hospital. Given that it is a one story complex and spread out among many acres, it is almost impossible to capture it entirely. Below is a picture of the front desk, where it then spreads to the right and all the way around to the back of where I am standing. I will try and take more specific pictures in the week to come, since it is my last week here in Kenya.

This last picture is for the pure joy of making my father have nightmares. This is one of many spiders that hang around in the trees outside the hospital. This picture is taken at a fair distance as well. Click the picture to enlarge!

That is all for now. It is sad to think that my time here is coming to an end. It has been a great experience and I have learned a lot. It will be interesting to see how I change as a person. I am ready to come home and enjoy the company and good food. I will pay my last visit to the orphanage next weekend. It will be difficult, but it has to be done. All I can hope for is that one day I will return and see all their lovely faces again.

  1. Kevin, grandma and I are always looking at your blog every morning. Not only us but everyone who we know that follows your blogs are amazed at your talent with the pen!! We will need to talk about this in depth when you return. You have few peers that can match your compassion and your great reporting capabilities.

Having recently explored Google for Ungali recipes I expect to be late for the repass you intend to prepare for your mother but I will be there for dessert! By the bye -- what do you have for dessert in Kenya??

    Love as always.

  2. Kevin,

I met a young woman when I was in Atlanta last week on a buying trip for my store. She grew up in Pennsylvania but lives full time in Kenya now. She visited, like you, as a college student and the country and the people got "under her skin" so much that she moved there. She works for a company helping the Kenyan people produce jewelry and comes to the states twice a year to market and sell the jewelry here. I ordered some to sell in my store. She couldn't stop talking about what a wonderful country Kenya is and I know you can relate to that. She actually went to college with someone that graduated from PR. It's a small world.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and your love of Kenya and the people there! It makes us all more aware of what an amazing world we live in.

  3. Ahhh Kevin! The PlayStation2 was a very thoughtful and excellent choice for them. Soon the children will be able to beat you at a game you that you have spent hours with. I get the sense from your post that once again you have realized the experience of giving is much grander than receiving. You will remember the looks in their eyes for the rest of your life. Thank you for sharing it with us.

The spider picture will NOT give me nightmares. Just be sure that you do NOT bring one home in your suitcase. That would be a problem.

I am very proud of what you are doing Kevin.

    Love You... Dad

  6. Kevin, We wish we could have seen the boy's eye's when you gave them the gift. So happy you thought to do that, You certainly have a giving heart. Thank you so much again for the wonderful pictures. Our Pastor Tim has been asking the congregation to pray for Kevin's stay in Kenya, and a safe trip home.
Now your stay is almost over, and we are all waiting for the great stories you will have to tell us.
Enjoy your last week in Mombasa.

  7. Kevin, what a terrific idea. The looks in those childrens faces when they saw your gift will never be forgotten in your mind! I am so excited that you are coming home soon but know that the children will miss you so much! Hopefully you can go back to see them again soon! I have been perfecting my "stew" recipe to serve you with greens and ugali for your first dinner with us. Bet you can't wait. Ha Ha!! Enjoy your last week in Mombasa! I know that it will be hard for you to leave. Have a safe trip back home!

  8. Grandpa P - There is no dessert here. It is too expensive. This trip has really made me realize how much of a sweet tooth I really have! You will be trying the wonderful ugali, just as soon as I perfect the recipe. See you soon!

Mrs. Batson - Thank you for all the compliments and for following my blog. That story is very interesting to hear. This country does get "under your skin." I have heard that it is impossible to only visit once. I know that I will be coming back!

Scott - The girls are away at school, so I havent seen them too much. Their initial expression was great. Except they listen to completely different music so I wont be surprised if most of our songs are deleted. Ha. Cant wait for the journey across the US. At least it will entail plenty of fast food! Im craving it!

Grandma E - Thanks for keeping up with my blogs and telling your friends about me. I wish you could have seen their reaction to the gift. It was wonderful. Thank you. Im looking forward to seeing you!

    Mom - No stew...never ever.

  12. Mom - I request a big salad with carrots and italian dressing. I also would like a variety of different cheeses to munch on, since cheese is very expensive here. Lastly, for the main course, I dont have anything specific I would want. Anything would be amazing really. Perhaps one of those tri-tip steaks? up to you, thanks! see you soon.

Bide - Thanks man. I cant wait to discuss it with you too. When will you be back in champaign? or have you been there all summer?

  15. Haha...I have already been planning a trip to In-N-Out burger as soon as I return. Just the thought of it makes me extremely hungry.

Thank you grandpa for your concern. It is imperative that I have Heinz 57 with every meal!
